During the five-Sunday month of October, the Deacons invite you to greet ("make a fuss over") four of our members who joined Maplewood in its infancy. Their contributions to the life of this congregation have helped to build and sustain its ministry since the 1950s. They truly inspire us all.
Ellie Bonanno
Ellie and her husband Justin ("Gus") were received into Maplewood's membership on December 18th, 1955. Away during the 80s and 90s, her membership here was reaffirmed in 2000. Ellie was "recruited" for the two-year-old church by organizing pastor S. Ralph Klein. She recalls being attracted by the strong children's curriculum, and remembers the little house on the corner, which was used for children's classes--and where the mice chewed up the crayons.
Ellie is a retired teacher of special education with the Edmonds School District.
Mary Mattison
Mary was received into membership at Maplewood on April 15, 1957. Away from about 1973, she was reaffirmed here in 2000. A Presbyterian from the age of 12, Mary has memories of the Reverend J. Carey Campbell, a father figure for Maplewood's young flock of 219, and of many activities of the 50 couples in its very active Clipper Club.
Before her 34 years with the Mariners Baseball franchise, Mary was the organizing force behind two local ski programs.Bob Olson
Bob and his wife Helen were received into membership at Maplewood on December 7, 1958. Formerly active in the Lake City Presbyterian Church, they transferred to "the new church that was closest to home" and were soon embarked on decades of involvement in its programs.
Before retirement, Bob was part owner of two beloved service stations in Lynnwood.Walt Dawson
Walt and his wife Fay were received into Maplewood's membership on February 25, 1959. Raised as Presbyterians, both Walt and Fay graduated from Whitworth College in Spokane. When their home was built on 86th W., Maplewood was conveniently close by to nurture their young family and to provide opportunities for Christian service.

The Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and the Peacemaking Offering
celebrated their thirtieth anniversary in 2010. The Offering was
organized following the adoption by the General Assembly of Peacemaking: The Believers’ Calling,
which called for an emphasis on peacemaking across the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.). This year as your church plans to receive this
Offering, remember the peacemakers of years past — in your congregation,
presbytery, synod and the denomination as a whole. Make this year a
time to renew your commitment to peacemaking as part of your calling as a
follower of Christ, who not only taught us the ways of peace but is our
peace.
The theme for the 2011 Offering is “A Harvest of Justice Is Sown in
Peace” (James 3:18). The art is Santa Cena, a serigraph by José Ignacio
Fletes Cruz. |
